MEDIA RELEASE
20 November 2009
For immediate release

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance
Today, the Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked across the world and Europe. This Day was established following a murder of Rita Hester in 1998 and serves as a reminder of existing prejudice, hatred and discrimination against trans people.
Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring Project reveals that more than 160 murders of trans people in the last 12 months of which 16 took place in Europe:
Turkey – 6
Italy – 4
UK – 2
Spain – 2
Serbia – 1
Russia – 1.
The number of murders is however only the tip of the iceberg with regards to trans discrimination and marginalisation in European societies today. Trans people experience high level of discrimination in employment, access to healthcare and other goods and services. Trans people are also particularly vulnerable to violence and hate crimes. This high level of discrimination has this year been formally acknowledged by Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner, who launched his “Human Rights and Gender Identity Issue paper”.
ILGA-Europe takes today’s occasion to extend its appeal to all European governments to assess where they are scoring poorly in terms of Commissioner Hammarberg’s recommendations and address the gaps without further delay.
ILGA-Europe calls on the European Commission and EU Member States to fully enforce the European Court of Justice’s jurisprudence through implementation of EU Gender Equality Directives vis-à-vis gender identify.

The 11th International Transgender Day of Remembrance

The 11th International Transgender Day of Remembrance will be
celebrated on 20th November 2009

(see www.transgenderdor.org et
www.rememberingourdead.org ).

This day reminds us :

- that every day, all over the world, thousands of transgender persons
are excluded, persecuted, hated, mistreated, aggressed and regularly
assassinated or pushed to suicide uniquely because of their so-called
"difference" from the so-called sex/gender "norm" ;

- that rather than decreasing, the visible number of transphobic crimes
is increasing at a staggering rate: if in the past, the number of
victims counted was in dozens, they are now counted in hundreds ;

- that the hatred leading to transphobic crimes is not the fruit of
chance or of a few "nasty individuals", but results from one of the
pillars supporting a political system leading to a culture and social
structure that produce a hoard of discriminations which rot society to
the core: heteropatriarchy, sexism, homophobia, transphobia... ;

- that the cynicism, hatred, social segregation and violence inspired by
this political system guarantee the comfort of the dominating and
exploiting classes, via the sacrifice of the oppressed and exploited,
who include transgender persons ;

- that this deadly political system is unacceptable, and must be fought
without concession, in the name of its past and present victims, but
also in the name of its victims to come: all transgender persons
worldwide.

Hi all in (or with links to) Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Armenia and Belarus,

please consider writing something about the situation of trans people in either of these countries. The United Nations periodically review the human rights situations in all member states. This is an excellent place to be able to talk to your government about the human rights situation in your country (or have somebody else give your input, if a direct involvement is too dangerous).
Your input does not have to be long (a page is great, 5 is maximum), but it can make a big difference, not only for your country, but for the visibility of our issues at the UN in general. Issues that you might want to consider (please add your own or leave out stuff, this is just a suggestion!) are: legal issues when you want to get a passport or birth certificate, violence by the state and by groups in society that the state is not addressing, access to healthcare (both trans and non-trans specific), discrimination in education and work, the ability to seek asylum because you are trans etc.
Let me know if I can help with this, or if you have any questions. Again, it does not have to be long, but any information can help a lot!!! I also know that John would be very happy to help with your input, he has been a wonderful ally with anything UN-related.

Boy, (Un)Interrupted, Transpinoy Rising!

On November 23, 1978 another human being was born in Makati City, Philippines. A quick glance at the baby’s genitals prompted the doctor to declare the baby female. Consequently, the baby was registered “female” on “her” birth certificate, was given a feminine name, and was raised and socialized to be a girl by “her” parents and the rest of society. However, there’s something this human being intimately knows that’s unknown to the doctor, “her” parents, and the rest of society. Something unknown even to the genitals this human being was born with. It’s something that the heart, brain, and consciousness feel and understand. It’s a feeling that doesn’t have the ephemeral quality of a physical sensation or of an emotion. It’s an innate understanding - it cannot be learned or unlearned. And this feeling and understanding are like a living truth that cannot be destroyed even by the most deadening stubborn dogma. “I am not female but male,” the grown-up baby who preferred to be called James Roque affirmed, “And I will definitely NOT survive living in the wrong body and being called the wrong pronouns for the rest of my life.”
